Ride the Wind, Feel the Energy

Aprilia makes you shiver again, with the 2011 750 Shiver

NEW YORK –  September 30, 2010 – Aprilia USA, the North American importer and distributor of award-winning motorcycles, announces the introduction of the 2011 Aprilia 750 Shiver. With a revised handlebar position, narrower seat and adjusted footpegs, the Aprilia Shiver boasts a much sportier riding position. Riders will find that the bike’s erognomic design is perfect for short trips as well as longer hauls.

Race-Inspired Design

The Shiver’s sportier look is attributed to the introduction of a short windshield and aggressive wave brake rotors. The Shiver also comes closer to the rider’s needs with a two-inch narrower saddle, yielding better bike control. Additionally, the rider foot pegs are set backwards and the handlebar curves set to the front end allowing the rider to assume a more race-riding position. The Shiver is also outfitted with a 5.5×17-inch rear wheel, which provides improved handling and also increases turn-in speed.

Engineered for Power, Stability and Smoothess

To ensure the rider has power and stability, the Shiver is designed with the multi-map integral Ride by Wire technology that was developed from racing experience gained with the Aprilia RSV4 superbike. With the simple touch of the starter control, the rider can select one of three maps (even while moving with closed throttle), including:

–          “Sport” to use when the rider wants to kick the bike in high gear;

–          “Touring” when smoother power delivery and fluidity are essential during the moments when the racing desires are set aside to enjoy a more relaxing ride, even two-up;

–          “Rain” when the road grip is not as good as it should be and maximum safety is the main objective.

Exceptional Performance

The Shiver’s V-90 engine achieves outstanding output values, with a maximum output of 95 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 81 Nm at 7,000 rpm.  The engine features the Aprilia twin-cylinder, which combines an exceptionally high level of output with maximum exploitation rates and user-friendly riding options. With top-of-the-class output levels, the Shiver delivers generous torque over most of the rpm range, insignificant vibrations and smooth full-power delivery.

The  2011 Shiver is available in Aprila Black or Crowd Silver, and retails for $8,999. For more information on the Aprilia 750 Shiver or to find a local Aprilia dealer, visit www.apriliausa.com.

Vespa Congratulates the City of Boston for Sustainability Effort

MOTOR SCOOTER COMMUTERS EARN EXCLUSIVE

PARKING SPACES IN BOSTON

NEW YORK (Sept. 7, 2010) – Metropolitan traffic congestion is an ever-growing concern that perplexes most U.S. cities, frustrating urban planners and residents alike. Increasing the use of two-wheel transportation is a simple alternative to reducing traffic congestion that urban commuters face daily across America.

For the growing number of residents living in metro Boston looking for the same solution to their in-town transportation challenges, switching to motor scooters is a very appealing option. However, with the switch, urban commuters sometimes find it difficult to locate designated parking areas, which prompted Boston to implement a motor scooter parking program modeled after successful efforts in other major metropolitan cities.

On August 26, the city of Boston began executing a motor scooter and motorcycle on-street parking pilot program to better accommodate two-wheel commuting in the city. Scooter enthusiasts will now find 40 spaces designated for scooter and motorcycle parking throughout the Back Bay area. The spaces are metered and pro-rated with 25 cents buying one hour instead of the standard 15 minutes. For commuters, the meters will be on from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and off at nights. Additionally, the parking spots do not have a time limit, eliminating the need to feed the meter.

“I’d like to congratulate Mayor Thomas Menino on his decision to execute a two-wheel parking program for the city of Boston,” said Paolo Timoni, president and CEO of Piaggio Group Americas, importers of Vespa motor scooters. “With better fuel economy than hybrid cars, scooters are not only a viable solution when it comes to reducing traffic congestion, but equally effective at reducing America’s oil consumption and protecting our environment. With this new initiative, therefore, Mayor Thomas Menino has also taken a concrete step to help Bostonians to reduce their oil consumption and carbon footprint. I can only hope that more cities will follow Boston’s example and offer similar programs for two-wheel commuters.”

In 2007 Piaggio Group Americas conducted a traffic model study in New York City in response to the growing concerns about traffic congestion.  The results showed by shifting the daytime vehicle mix to 80 percent cars / 20 percent scooters, the following would result annually:

 A total decrease in delay of more than 4.6 million hours per year – which translates to time savings of nearly 100 working hours per person;

Reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 26,000 tons (52,000,000-pounds) per year;

A decrease in fuel consumption by more than 2.5 million gallons per year

A total savings for New York City of more than $122 million per year in fuel and labor productivity.

In addition to Boston, many other US metropolitan cities already have programs and incentives for two-wheel commuters. San Francisco has more than 1,000 designated parking spaces and areas for motor scooters, and several other cities have orchestrated motor scooter commuter days, including Atlanta and Philadelphia. On a national level, the annual Ride to Work Day (set for June 20, 2011; see more at http://www.ridetowork.org) continues to raise the visibility of two-wheel commuting and demonstrates how motor scooters and motorcycles make parking easier and help traffic flow. For more information about the benefits of two-wheel transportation, visit www.vespausa.com and click on the Vespanomics section.

BREAST CANCER ORGANIZATIONS AND VESPA USA ZOOM TOWARD NEW PINK VESPA

BREAST CANCER ORGANIZATIONS AND VESPA USA ZOOM TOWARD NEW PINK VESPA
FUND-RAISING MILESTONES

NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2009 – As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month nears
the midway point, several nonprofit agencies participating in Vespa USA’s
Pink fund-raising program are reaching – and reaching for – impressive new
milestones.  The newest initiative underway is
http://www.armyofwomen.org/Pink_Vespa_Contest from the Love/Avon Army of Women, a
program of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, whose goal is to
encourage members to recruit one million women to take part in breast cancer
research.  The top five individuals who recruit the most new members for the
Army of Women will be entered into a drawing to win a pink Vespa LX 50.
Others, like Young Survival Coalition (YSC), are just a few paces away from
reaching their target of recruiting 10,000 fans on their Facebook fan page
http://www.facebook.com/youngsurvivalcoalition.

Vespa USA is working with a number of women’s organizations as part of
Lifetime Networks’ 15th annual National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
campaign, “Stop Breast Cancer for Life: The Power of 15.” Each agency
received a donated pink Vespa LX 50 to help raise funds for their unique
missions – from research and education to peer and resource support.
Consumers who want to help support these causes are invited to check out all
the current Pink Vespa initiatives at http://www.vespausa.com.

PURSUING THE CURE: MILES TO GO BEFORE WE SLEEP

Large or small, professionally organized or grassroots; it is these
nonprofit organizations that have put the national spotlight on breast
cancer and garnered strong public and corporate support to fight the
disease; by providing patients and affected families with important tools
and resources.  There is still much work to be done, and Vespa USA invites
everyone to support these or any of the great ongoing efforts by individuals
and companies alike.

Now through Nov. 23, 2009, the Army of Women is adding a special incentive
to those helping the organization reach its goal of one million members.
The top five registered member recruiters will be entered into a drawing and
will have a chance to win a limited edition pink Vespa LX 50 by recruiting
the most new members during the specified dates.  Official details for the
contest can be found at http://www.armyofwomen.com. The winner also agrees to
extend the reach of this campaign by using the pink Vespa to promote the
Army of Women and documenting their recruitment journey through a blog on
the Army of Women Web site.

Young Survival Coalition (YSC), an organization focused on women under 40
affected by breast cancer, is inviting supporters to become fans on their
Facebook page.  With a goal of recruiting 10,000 Facebook fans – currently
their page has more than 9,000 – the YSC is rapidly approaching the finish
line.  Anyone who becomes a fan prior to Nov. 16, 2009, will be eligible to
win the pink Vespa LX 50.

Vespa fans also have a chance to support breast cancer awareness by bidding
and ultimately donating their purchase price to one of a number of online
auctions.  Several auctions are ending soon, such as the Breast Cancer
Research Foundation’s (www.bcrfcure.org) online auction through
charitybuzz.com – which ends Oct. 22, 2009.

Cup With Love (www.cupwithlove.org), an organization providing emotional
support to anyone impacted by cancer; and Nueva Vida (www.nueva-vida.org),
an organization that informs, supports and empowers Latinas whose lives are
affected by cancer; are also raffling off a pink Vespa through their
respective Web sites during October.

The Vespa Pink Campaign invites all current and future scooter fans to
actively participate in one or all the Breast Cancer Awareness Month
programs. Agencies adding a pink Vespa to their October fund-raising
initiatives include: Breast Cancer Network of Strength, The Breast Cancer
Research Foundation, Breastcancer.org, Bright Pink, Cup With Love, Dr. Susan
Love Research Foundation, The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure, My Vision Foundation, Nueva Vida, Prevent Cancer
Foundation, SHARE and Young Survival Coalition. For more information on all
of the participating breast cancer organization programs, visit
http://www.vespausa.com and learn how to support unique breast cancer fundraising
efforts around the country.

Breast cancer affects everyone.  This year alone, 192,370 new cases of
invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States.
It is the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 15 to 54, and nearly
half of all Vespa riders are women.  A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer
every three minutes and the disease claims a life every 13 minutes. These
women are mothers, sisters and wives – but breast cancer also directly
touches men.  Every year almost 2,000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer
and 440 will die.

NEW YORK, June 25, 2009 – Vespa USA invites enthusiasts everywhere to jump into the saddle of their favorite scooter and head to Los Gatos, CA from July 2 to 5 for Amerivespa 2009, an annual celebration of scooter culture and community, organized by the Vespa Club of America (VCOA).  This year’s edition is also co-hosted by the Vespa Club Los Gatos and the event is expected to draw hundreds of participants from every corner of the country.  True to the scooter community’s focus on camaraderie and inclusivity, everyone as well as all makes and models are welcome – regardless of whether you prefer your scooters vintage or modern, or are a new or seasoned rider.

“Vespa owners and fans value the spirit of freedom and adventure, and nowhere is that more evident than at this country’s biggest annual scooter get-together,” said Kevin Andrews, brand manager, Vespa USA.  “We’re looking forward to celebrating the Fourth of July weekend doing what we like best – making new friends with fellow scooterists and sharing new adventures.”

This year’s Amerivespa attendees will enjoy a wide range of events, activities and entertainment, including the chance to win an all-new Vespa GTS 300 Super, Vespa’s highest-performance scooter to-date.  Throughout the long holiday weekend, attendees can be busy participants or just enjoy bystander status.  You’ll see some of the most colorful customs as well as rare restorations at the non-traditional Concours d’Elegance, which celebrates the scooter in all its fun forms instead of focusing on matching part numbers and standards of correctness.  Competition-minded riders might want to enter the scooter drag race – where your ability to cross the finish line last will get you on the podium.  Whether you’re a serious scooterist with an interest in factory technician tips or a casual rider who would prefer a guided shopping ride, there’s an opportunity to twist-and-go in many different directions.

Aprilia USA adds five additional dates to its popular new consumer ride experience

NEW YORK, NY – April 3, 2009 – Following the successful launch and fast sell-out of the Aprilia Adventure ride experience during this year’s Daytona Bike Week, Aprilia USA has added five additional dates to the program.  Enthusiasts will now be able to reserve a full hour of seat time to evaluate and enjoy the latest Aprilia motorcycles on the best regional roads.  Participants even take home some special mementos of the experience.  The Aprilia Adventure is available at:

Each hour-long Aprilia Adventure ride is customized to take advantage of the best local and regional riding routes.  Along the way, riders sample and swap new 2009 models such as the all-new Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 as well as long-time favorites, such as the award-winning Tuono and RSV 1000 R.  Registration for the ride is exclusively on-site at each event.  For the latest information on Aprilia products and events, visit www.apriliausa.com.

Europe’s Two-Wheelers Want to be Treated the same as Cars

Bologna (Italy), 26.3.2009 – The European Powered Two-wheeler industry will ask the European Commission and EU member states for same treatment as car industry.

Gathering for their annual General Assembly hosted by Ducati in Bologna, Italy, ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, urged for similar measures to those devised for the car sector to be applied to the powered two-wheeler industry in order to defy the economic crisis.

The General Assembly also unanimously confirmed Mr Pierer as President of ACEM for another two-year term and welcomed two new Members: BRP, manufacturer of a new concept of road tricycle, with an engine factory located in Austria, and ARGE2RAD, the Austrian Association of PTW manufacturers and distributors.

Recently, the European Commission announced initiatives and instruments to fight the downturn in the automotive sector. Due to its similarities to the car sector, the PTW industry should be  entitled to the same benefits. The PTW sector needs the same urgent and drastic measures aimed at preventing a prolonged period of recession, supporting manufacturing and continuing to drive forward the environmental goals that are shared by policy makers and manufacturers.

The Communication on the European automotive industry, presented on February 25th by the European Commission, clearly shows the need for urgent action and lists various options and tools. Inclusion of powered two-wheelers in the scope of the European Commission’s measures to respond to the crisis in the automotive sector would secure the future of an otherwise healthy and innovating industry.

Stefan Pierer, ACEM President and CEO of Austrian manufacturer KTM Sport Motorcycles, stated: “By identifying a series of tools and measures to support the automotive sector, the EU has shown its ability to act in times of crisis. Not unlike the car sector, the motorcycle industry is experiencing the same kind of problems and, despite our lesser size, we need the same kind of tools if are to successfully overcome this downturn”.

European Member States must tackle the PTW industry’s problems with the same determination  applied  to the car sector. Viable businesses and jobs are at stake in the motorcycle industry as well, which is being hit by the current economic crisis with new registrations down by 8% in 2008 and poor forecasts for 2009. These figures partially hide the significant -34% contraction (-42% for mopeds and -28% for motorcycles) of the last quarter of 2008 over the same period of 2007. This dramatic drop has been confirmed by the January 2009 registrations showing a further negative signal in major PTW markets in the range of -40%. In this context scrapping schemes aimed at supporting the demand for new vehicles and benefiting cleaner and safer mobility should be introduced.

“Another pressing issue to resolve – concluded Mr Pierer – remains the limited access to credit due to the non-functioning of the financial market. Action must be now taken without further delay to lift bureaucratic barriers and speed up implementation at national level. A coordinated European policy would not only ensure more fairness and respect for EU competition rules but – more importantly – greater efficiency in a single, European market”.

Mr Gabriele Del Torchio, Ducati President and CEO, said: “As one of ACEM’s founding members Ducati is honoured to have hosted the General Assembly on the occasion of ACEM’s 15th Anniversary. Ducati has believed from the beginning in the necessity of uniting forces to achieve common goals but at the same time putting forward a strong image of the motorcycle industry which stands for excitement, innovation and industrial excellence. In spite of the economic challenges ahead, we will continue with the same passion and commitment to work together within ACEM for the wellbeing of the motorcycle sector in Europe”.

Last December ACEM announced a set of initiatives based on innovation, safety and environmental performance ensuring that the motorcycles and scooters of tomorrow will respond the future social needs and sustainability requirements while continuing to represent an exciting and convenient mobility tool.

About ACEM
ACEM, the Motorcycle Industry in Europe, is the professional body representing the interests and combined skills of 12 powered two wheelers (PTWs) manufacturers producing a total of 25 motorcycle and moped brands, and 15 national associations out of 13 European countries, representing a turn-over of €10bn and guaranteeing jobs to over 200.000 people.

Piaggio Opens National Technical Center in Southern California

Piaggio Opens National Technical Center in Southern California

New product testing and technical training facility supports continued
expansion of company’s Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio and Vespa brand dealer
network

NEW YORK, March 4, 2009 – Piaggio Group Americas, importer and distributor
of Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio and Vespa brands, announces the opening of
its new national Technical Center in Costa Mesa, CA.  The 12,000 square foot
facility houses the company’s product testing and technical training
operations, including factory product training and classroom instruction for
service technicians from all U.S. and Canadian dealerships, as well as Latin
American importers.  Piaggio, which had all-time record-setting U.S. sales
in 2008, continues to expand both its model line and dealer network with
over 500 dealers serving customers in North America.  The company also
anticipates ongoing strong demand for its diverse range of scooters and
motorcycles as consumers shift focus to more economical personal
transportation.

With design, engineering and manufacturing based in Italy, providing North
and South American dealers and importers with more convenient access to
factory expertise and the latest technical information is especially
important to Piaggio Group Americas’ U.S. based team.

“While many manufacturers choose to train technicians at technical colleges,
we believe that nothing compares to getting the inside story about the
latest Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio or Vespa straight from the factory’s own
technical experts,” said Erik Larson, Director, Technical Service and
Warranty, Piaggio Group Americas. “Factory-level training means that our
dealer service professionals will learn from the very best – the technical
professionals who were part of a new motorcycle or scooter model’s actual
development.  And, that first-hand factory expertise translates into a real
service edge for Piaggio dealers.”

The new facility expands Piaggio’s presence in Orange County, California, a
home base for numerous motorcycle manufacturers, suppliers and industry
groups.  In addition to giving the company a bigger West Coast footprint,
the new Technical Center also allows Piaggio’s U.S. team access to ongoing
road and off-road testing.  Whether it’s the powerful new Vespa GTS 300
Super scooter or cutting-edge new technology, such as the Aprilia 850 Mana’s
unique transmission management system, staff can now evaluate each product’s
technical strengths in both classroom and real world settings, year-round.

In addition to product testing and technician training, the Piaggio
Technical Center also serves as the headquarters for the company’s West
Coast press and promotional fleet, including media test bikes.

Italian Two-wheeled Marvels Popular in North America

Innovative additions to Italian manufacturer’s motorcycle and scooter lines result in strong 2008 growth and plenty of expansion opportunity for 2009

NEW YORK – March 6, 2009 – Aprilia USA, the U.S. importer and distributor of innovative, technology-driven motorcycles and scooters, finished 2008 with strong sales gains across its expanding product range. The company sold 66.4 % more bikes and scooters to customers in the U.S. market, spurred by the addition of four all-new motorcycles, three fresh scooter models and continued strengthening of its dealer network. Along with plenty of new product arriving from the Noale, Italy based factory, Aprilia USA also continued to add racing successes to its long list of championships, such as the U.S. company’s second consecutive MOTO-ST road race championship and first place in the 2008 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 750cc category.

For 2009, company executives see more opportunity. “Our 2008 sales results are remarkable, especially in light of overall declining motorcycle industry sales,” says Gary Pietruszewski, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Piaggio Group Americas. “Much of our success can be attributed to a broader product range in dealer showrooms. For 2009 we expect to continue sales growth, thanks to new product like the much-anticipated RSV4 superbike and continued expansion of the dealer network. Add our new Aprilia Adventure demo program, new race teams competing in the AMA Daytona SportBike series and Aprilia’s return to World Superbike racing, and you have all the ingredients for a very exciting year.” Aprilia’s U.S. motorcycle sales rose over 19 percent, fueled by new introductions like the company’s first-ever mid-size V-Twin, the SL 750 Shiver.

Industry accolades for the Shiver include its superior rideability, all-day comfort and signature technical innovations, such as its unique tri-map ride-by-wire system. Also contributing to Aprilia’s success in the USA during 2008 was the mid-year introduction of the Aprilia 850 Mana, featuring a leading-edge multi-shift-mode transmission that puts both auto-drive or manual-style shifting options at the rider’s disposal. The track-only GP-inspired RS 125, represented an all-new option for enthusiasts looking for a cost-efficient and super-fun option to hone riding skills on a closed course.

These newcomers bolstered an already formidable Aprilia motorcycle lineup, which includes the two time Moto ST champion the RSV 1000 R and it’s naked companion the Tuono 1000 R. The V-twin Supermoto style SXV models continued their winning ways in the AMA Pro Supermoto series and added many club level road race wins and a few championships to their racing resume. The recently introduced 750 Dorsoduro will continue to build on the Aprilia Supermoto dominance by offering a larger, much more street-oriented machine which incorporates Aprilia’s world championship Supermoto racing DNA. Aprilia scooter sales doubled over the 12-month period as a result of robust consumer demand for fuel-efficient transportation options.

Aprilia scooters are some of the most technically advanced scoters on the market including the race inspired SR 50 R with a direct fuel injected engine and the classically styled Scarabeo 200 with linked braking. For 2009 Aprilia’s ultimate urban scooter, the SportCity 250, is joined by two additional family members, the SportCity 50 and SportCity 125. Both are top performers within their respective displacement categories. U.S. Dealer Network and Brand Development Focus Continues in 2009 Aprilia’s U.S. dealer network again grew in 2008, with more than 170 retailers representing the brand in key U.S. markets by the end of the year.

Retail network development continues to be a focus for the company throughout 2009 as Aprilia sharpens its brand focus, thanks to the current crop of new models emerging from the company’s Italian design studio. Under the leadership of design chief Miguel Galuzzi, highly anticipated new motorcycles like the RSV4 superbike – already getting great advance accolades – are expected to raise Aprilia’s technology leader profile and racing heritage even further.

The company will also focus its 2009 marketing programs on reaching serious enthusiast customers. New programs like the Aprilia Adventure matches enthusiasts with the latest machines on lengthy real-world demo rides, an essential experience for evaluating the bikes’ technical innovations. While other companies are reducing their racing expenditure in the USA, Aprilia will leverage their global racing heritage by competing in the new AMA Daytona SportBike series with the Factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies Team and riders Ben Thompson and Chaz Davies.

Aprilia will also be competing in the World Superbike races at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah this year with four-time world champion Max Biaggi and Shinya Nakano racing the RSV4. Race enthusiast will also see Aprilia in action at the prestigious Indianapolis Speedway when the 125 and 250 Moto GP series return to this historic location this summer. Cool off with the classics this summer at the AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame
Museum

PICKERINGTON, OH – Two-wheel enthusiasts are invited to the American
Motorcyclist Association’s (AMA) Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum this summer
for the 4th annual Japanese Motorcycle Saturday on June 6, 2009, and the 4th
annual British & European Motorcycle Saturday on August 22, 2009.  Located
on the AMA campus in Pickerington, Ohio, just a few miles east of Columbus,
the Museum is the country’s premier showcase of motorcycling heritage and
history.

Both events are expected to attract hundreds of riders, and will feature
un-judged bike shows and seminars from collectors and experts.  The 4th
annual Japanese Motorcycle Saturday on June 6 will showcase a wide variety
of motorcycles representing decades of metric design and engineering
ingenuity.  From sportbikes to café racers to tourers, every bike style is
welcome.  Enthusiasts can ride in on a classic Japanese bike or simply stop
by to admire the vintage machines.  Last year a 1983 Honda CB1100R and an
early 1980s Yamaha RZ500 two-stroke were highlights of the event.

Later in the summer, the Museum will host the 4th annual British & European
Motorcycle Saturday on August 22.  Plenty of Ducatis, Triumphs, Nortons,
BMWs, Aprilias, Moto Guzzis and other marques that are sure to impress will
be on display for the event.  The spotlight at British & European Motorcycle
Saturday was stolen last year by the Ducati Riders of Ohio Club, with over
20 members riding in for the event – one on Ducati’s finest, the
Desmosedici.  This year’s showcase promises to feature equally compelling
classics.

Admission for each Classic Motorcycle Saturday event is only $10 and
includes access to all museum exhibits, including “MotoStars: Celebrities +
Motorcycles,” an installation spotlighting a number of the world’s most
well-known enthusiasts, and “Awesome-Ness,” chronicling the career of the
legendary Arlen Ness.
